Atlanta United has signed Greek forward Giorgos Giakoumakis through the 2026 season, the club announced Wednesday. Giakoumakis, 28, joins Atlanta after a successful stint with Scottish Premiership side Celtic, where he scored 26 goals in 56 appearances.
Born in Crete, Greece, Giakoumakis began his career with local club OFI Crete before moving to Platanias in 2017. He then joined AEK Athens in 2018, where he won the Greek Cup in 2019. In 2021, he signed with Celtic and quickly became a fan favorite. In his first season with the Hoops, Giakoumakis scored 13 goals in 24 league appearances, helping the club win the Scottish Premiership title.
Giakoumakis is a powerful and clinical striker who is known for his aerial ability and finishing. He is also a hard worker and is not afraid to put in the dirty work. He will be a valuable addition to Atlanta United's attack, which is already one of the most potent in MLS.
Atlanta United will open the 2023 MLS season on Saturday, February 25, at home against the San Jose Earthquakes.
