Race Weekend Features Revised Schedule, Including Sprint Race
The 2024 Formula 1 season continues this weekend as the sport returns to China for the first time in five years. The Chinese Grand Prix will take place at the Shanghai International Circuit from April 19-21, and for the first time, the race weekend will feature a Sprint race.
The Sprint race format was introduced in 2021 and consists of a 100km race on Saturday that determines the starting grid for the main Grand Prix on Sunday. The Sprint race is half the distance of a normal race and awards points to the top 8 finishers.
In addition to the Sprint race, the Chinese Grand Prix weekend will feature the traditional free practice sessions and qualifying session on Friday and Saturday. The Grand Prix itself will take place on Sunday at 14:00 local time (GMT+8).
Formula 1 last raced in China in 2019, when Lewis Hamilton won the race for Mercedes. The 2020 and 2021 races were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
